Product Description

This early, circa 1840-1848 Bailey & Company Philadelphia coin silver julep cup or beaker dates from the time when Joseph T. Bailey, F. W.Bailey, Jeremiah Robbins,James Gallagher and Joseph T. Bailey II were in partnership. The four stamp mark with winged bird, the letter U, a shield, and a mark that’s a little rubbed before the bird identifies the Bailey maker’s mark. Also stamped is the address of the manufactory, 136 Chestnut Street in downtown Philadelphia. I’ve always liked Bailey’s early marks, so reminiscent of early Baltimore assay marks. A beautiful period monogram W adorns the cup. Dimensions are 3-3/4 inches tall x 3-1/2 inches in diameter at the lip with a weight of 4.6 troy ounces. Fine condition commensurate with age. Bailey & Co. was originally Bailey & Kitchen (1832-1846), then Bailey Banks and Biddle Co. which was in business from 1894 until just recently. I am from Philadelphia and fondly remember shopping downtown at Bailey Banks & Biddle with my mother when you could find some one to repair your antique gold bangle bracelets and just absorb the aura of a different kind of shopping experience. This cup is priced to sell.
